As this years hate encrusted season of the Real World comes to a close we were treated to the previews for The Challenge: Rivals II. All I can say is ugh.
I've been watching Real World since it began in New York circa 1992 and I have to say that this season was the most difficult to watch by far. Every episode ended with some sort of disturbing, mega-drama that left me feeling a little bit sick and sad. I realize that the show is edited but it looked as if no one was having very much fun at all. I liked all the people this season for the most part. Yet they were all extremely horrible to each other at one point or another. The behavior overall was largely appalling with Nia, Johnny, Averey and Ana being the worst offenders, in that order. Nia is a twisted and manipulative person in general who likes to mind-f**k people for sport. But I thought it was nice of her to befriend Jessica when Averey and Ana just flat out said that they didn't like her. That was just uncivillized. The swearing and spitting (?) notwithstanding, even Nia had a sliver of a redeeming quality but it quickly disappeared after the poop storm with Johnny and Averey. I was actually thinking that Nia was right about cleaning up the dog's poo. She had a right to be annoyed that she stepped in it. Johnny acted like an a-whole and things escalated and went out of control from there. Culminating with what sounded like a a direct threat to put hit out on Jordan. Fortunately Marlon diffused the situation much to Nia's chagrin.
I loved the addition of Miss Coral this season. I have always thought that the participants on the Real World would benefit greatly from some mediation/conflict resolution therapy and Coral was the perfect person to administer the reality check. Nothing gets past quick-witted Coral and no one gets off easily. Coral rocks.
I'm always a sucker for a happy ending and this seasons Real World ending was anything but happy. After the show ends you're left with the feeling that these people shared in a special experience together. One that bonds them for the rest of their lives. I always wonder "Will they remain friends? Will they call each other? Would they ever hang out again? After this season of acrimony and animosity, I'm just kind of glad that it's over. I get the feeling that so are they. I don't know if I'm ready for The Challenge: Rivals II that looks like it'll be another season of people being so hyper-vile to one another. At least it won't be on for a couple of weeks. It'll give me some time to recover.
And I just have to say that Jordan looks like Jim Caviezel. Amirite?
